Thought Adjuster: “Spiritual insight is often a precursor to material wisdom. When a human being has achieved a connection with their inner Spark of God, they are more likely to begin to display an ability to choose the best path—one that cannot be explained by the simple sum of material knowledge and experiences. Human beings are creatures meant to learn from their experiences, but in some cases, suffering and trial-and-error are not necessary in order to understand what the best course of action is, just as it is not necessary to jump from the top floor of a building to know that doing so could be harmful to your health.

Many religious disciplines that seek to bring forth the best in human beings have spoken in favor of mental control—that is, the effort to discriminate the quality of the thoughts we allow into our minds. Time and again, people have been advised to suppress negative thoughts and to seek to uplift the mind with positive thoughts filled with hope and love. This has always been advice that offered no apparent evidence of its effectiveness, but those who had the discipline to control their thoughts experienced the many benefits derived from this practice and therefore recommended it to others.

Today, science has reached a level at which it can validate this ancient knowledge. Contemporary science has clarified how thoughts can determine the chemistry of the human body, influencing the hormones that promote physical and mental health. Science has clearly demonstrated that positive thoughts affect us positively, while negative thoughts harm us. Even the attitude we adopt toward problems and challenges predisposes us to resolve situations with greater or lesser effectiveness. Those who learn to control their minds—which is the very essence of self-mastery—are truly taking the reins of their own destiny and making their best effort to achieve the goal of perfection. Those who fill their thoughts with truth, beauty, and goodness can do nothing but reap these same qualities in their life experience. Truly, a person will become what they carry in their mind.

The point is that it was not necessary to wait for science to demonstrate this fact in order to put this discipline into practice and decide to take control of our way of thinking. When, in the deepest part of your being, you feel the impulse and motivation to do something, explore it without allowing yourself to be influenced by the beliefs and dogmas of the past. In reality, you do not need evidence to prove to others what is a reality in your own experience. There are many ideas that are not explored because of the human tendency to do what the group does—ideas such as loving others without reservation; serving your brothers and sisters in this world by offering the best of yourself; seeking and finding God in your heart without the need for intermediaries; and receiving the counsel and guidance of the Heavenly Father directly. These are things that will never be demonstrable by science nor fully comprehensible to the mortal mind, yet they bring about great changes and benefits in the lives of those who pursue these goals wholeheartedly, motivated solely by their faith and hope.”
