Thought Adjuster: “In this world, you must do something to earn money, for in this era, this is the only way your civilization may acquire the goods and services necessary to satisfy their needs. Remember that you must strive to establish your real needs—those upon whose fulfillment your survival and your opportunities for spiritual progress depend. Obtaining food for your physical body is a real need, for without food, your body would die, and your mind would not function properly to sustain healthy spiritual progress.

But how can you live in this world while you learn the things necessary for the next world? How are efforts to earn money harmonized with the higher way in which work is regarded in the mansion worlds? Here, it is helpful to review once again what work is like in the worlds to come. Work—the activities necessary for sustaining the morontial institutions—has two main functions, and neither of them is to earn money. The first function is to learn. All the tasks you perform beyond this life will serve to teach you something, to help you become increasingly familiar with some aspect of the universe at the level where you are living. The other function is to provide an avenue for lovingly serving your fellow beings, for everything you do will have a purpose aligned with the universal and eternal purpose of the Father—the establishment of the entire creation in light and life.

The first dimension of work will allow you to direct your vocations toward what interests you and what your personality feels most drawn to. The second dimension will offer you the opportunity to manifest the best of your personality—that which aspires to become increasingly like God—through an activity of your choosing. The goal of every being working within the universe is to achieve this elevated expression of self while collaborating with the Father in a co-creative process of manifesting an ever more beautiful reality. Imagine for a moment what life will be like in those worlds where you will work at what you most desire and achieve success as you become more spiritual through the performance of your functions. Work is truly the greatest resource you will possess for spiritual growth and for attaining supreme satisfactions.

This understanding of work beyond this world can illuminate your efforts while you live on this sphere. Constantly seeking new ways to earn more money will offer you nothing of eternal value; therefore, it is essentially a waste of time. Likewise, financial success or failure has no relevance to your eternal life. What is relevant is the way in which you contribute to the Father’s will through the work you perform here on this planet. Can you work in such a way that your efforts become an elevated service to your brothers and sisters, to the entire creation, and to God? Can you work in such a way that you learn important lessons that you will carry with you beyond this life?

Surely you could discover many ways to elevate the work you do to the level of loving service and spiritual edification. Every effort you make to collaborate more harmoniously and efficiently with your fellow beings, to give your best in every task you must perform, to learn and discover better ways of carrying out your functions, and to be grateful for the opportunities for service that open before you will be ingredients that help you build a noble and mature soul ready for life beyond this world.

This new consideration of work as a means of expression in which monetary benefits are merely a secondary—though necessary in this world—effect will open your eyes to reevaluate the importance of other activities that fall within this elevated category but are not regarded as “work” from a material point of view. These activities include exploration and religious practice—the effort to draw closer to God and to become better and better; the care and upbringing of children—the supreme enterprise of collaborating with God in shaping new souls; and service to the community—relationships with those fellow beings within our sphere of influence: our relatives, our friends, our coworkers, our neighbors, and so on. All these activities are also part of the work that we must all perform, giving our best effort to move closer to the attainment of the goals of eternity.”
