Thought Adjuster: “How is it that religion has gone from being a method for drawing closer to God to becoming a complex series of doctrines and beliefs that rarely have anything to do with reality? Many people criticize religion today because of the results it commonly produces: fundamentalism, stagnation, antagonism, fanaticism, terrorism. Apparently, God, according to the way each group imagines him, is capable of choosing one group of human beings to take charge of converting others, using any means available, including violence and deception.

How is it that human beings can so easily lose sight of the nature of their heavenly Father? Each person can create in their mind the image of a just and loving father. From there, the idea of God is illuminated by imagining an ideal father whose decisions and actions always possess the attributes of truth, beauty, and goodness. How can deception and violence be confused with goodness? How can truth resist the sincere questions of those who desire to understand it? What beauty is there in the human effort to force others to think in the same way?

Religion is simply the effort of a human being to understand the Creator and attempt to become like Him, thus improving oneself and becoming more useful to one’s group, one’s world, and the entire universe. That is all. This journey can be inspired by the ideas of others, whether expressed in speeches or through the written word, but in the end, these received ideas must be able to pass through the filter of true experience in order to prove their validity and establish their value in achieving the religious goal. Therefore, every concept, dogma, idea, or doctrine should be interpreted as a suggestion, and through sincere experimentation one should decide whether it should be adopted or forgotten.

You already have enough historical evidence to know that the effort to convince others that your path is the only path always ends in disaster. There is already sufficient proof to establish the fact that focusing only on what makes us different causes us to lose sight of our inherent similarity and our common origin. It is time to try an alternative path. Examine your different religions and strive to reach the origin and the basic premises of each one. You will see that there are things common to all religions that worship one God, and that the foundations are the same for everyone. In the end, everything comes down to love: love for the Father, love for one’s neighbor.

Discover how all of your religions, in principle, seek the same goal—the knowledge of God and the improvement of humanity. Every religion begins with the desire to understand God, normally based on the personal experience of some outstanding individual. Then, over time, more things are added on top of the basic truths, things that are determined by geographical location, culture, and customs. These things are exclusively human creations and should not be confused with revelations or sacred words.

It is time to elevate religion from the human to the divine. Let it not be human beings who invent God. Rather, let the Father reveal Himself through His presence within us, through our individual and collective effort to know God and discover Him within our own being. This is possible, and some pioneers in your world have done this and continue to do so, by sincerely and faithfully exploring within themselves the answers and inspiration they need to rise above their own limitations and find their heavenly Father.”
