DO WE REALLY HAVE TO LET GO OF EVERYTHING?
By Sai Baba
Channel: Jahn J Kassl
From the German original
Can you look at your life from a broader perspective and view your relationships and friendships from a bird's eye view—or are you always involved? That's the question, and it will determine whether you can let go of things and people—or whether you're addicted to them.
From hostel to hostel
"The wise man therefore yearns for nothing and no one and does not bind himself to things that do not deserve attachment. Turn all your longing and all your heart's attachment to God. For everything else, love a thing as it deserves, and no more. Love people as the people they are, and no more. If you attach your heart more strongly to them, it only reveals your ignorance of your true nature. Only for a short time can you pretend that the house you have rented belongs to you. As soon as the rental period is up, someone else takes it over. As you reflect on these lines, you will realize that your husband, wife, children, relatives, and possessions do not belong to you for long. They belong to you only for a short time.
So why waste your life worrying about these impermanent things? Even a millionaire can only eat as much as his stomach can hold, no more.
Man must understand his stay on this earth as if he were a traveler who, at nightfall, takes refuge in an inn. As soon as dawn breaks, he moves on.
He's moving toward his goal, from hostel to hostel, taking one stage at a time. It's good to view life from this perspective."
(Sai Baba, Jesus and Sai Baba, p. 416 ff., Govinda Sai Publishing House)
JJK: I opened these inspiring words from Sai Baba today after I woke up. Beautiful! My question: When does love for my neighbors—like my wife, family, friends—become a dependency? How can I let go of these existential ties in everyday life? After all, we are there for one another and we enjoy the presence of loved ones. So where does the key to loving one's neighbor in freedom lie?
SAI BABA: The key lies within you. Your consciousness is the key. This means: As long as you remain inwardly focused on God and are aware of the transience of your human life in everyday life, your perception remains pure and your charity free from dependence.
How do you look at your life?
Can you look at your life from a broader perspective and view your relationships and friendships from a bird's eye view—or are you always involved? That's the question, and it will determine whether you can let go of things and people—or whether you're addicted to them.
JJK: When you lose a loved one, that is, when they die, it still hurts. Why is that so, even if I can let go internally?
SAI BABA: That is human nature. Sadness and joy are attributes of human consciousness, and these must be experienced and acted out.
This, too, defines a person and makes them so special. The decisive factor is whether you remain stuck in grief.
Whether a person can truly let go becomes apparent when they lose something valuable. How does a person deal with loss, what do they choose to feel, and what response do they give to this situation? Before that, everything is pure theory.
LETTING GO – the buzzword of the time
JJK: Letting go is on everyone's lips, a buzzword and a dominant theme in the esoteric scene. However, it seems to me that many "gurus" haven't even realized the act of letting go themselves. They are just as attached to their students and their wealth as established religions are to their believers and their earthly treasures.
SAI BABA: Anyone who has experienced loss knows how it feels and knows whether they can let go.
The person remains involved until he or she makes a new decision, perceiving the soul's wake-up call and responding accordingly. Preachers abound, but those who have realized it are few and far between.
Wisdom from qualified sources is of great help to people; half-truths, not based on personal experience, are not credible. Therefore, true gurus must be clearly distinguished from false masters, and genuine religious communities from fake groups. Today, it is impossible to permanently deceive someone embarking on a spiritual quest.
Times are changing radically and only the truth endures before man.
JJK: Letting go? We have plenty of opportunities to practice that. Because of the current changes, we're being asked to let go of almost everything.
Is there any bond other than God? I mean, do we really have to let go of everything?
SAI BABA: Love for all that is – in freedom! You are connected to everything, and yet you are a unique, infinite, and omnipresent consciousness. Letting go of earthly ties and understanding that true soul families remain connected far beyond the earthly realm—that is the experience. What it's all about: loving and being free, letting go of external appearances, and feeling and living within the connection with all that is.
Detached from earthly things, meaning will reveal itself to you; so follow your longing to the Creator.
